Dentistry applicants can use a maximum of four UCAS choices for Dentistry and Medicine courses. That means each dental-school choice carries significant strategic weight, and a poorly matched application can leave you with fewer realistic options than a Medicine applicant.
There are roughly 18 UK universities offering primary Dentistry degrees, compared with more than 50 medical schools. Fewer places, fewer backups and less room for error make strategic shortlisting one of the highest-leverage parts of the application.
Dental schools do not all select in the same way. Some place heavy weight on the UCAT; others look more closely at GCSEs, predicted grades, contextual data or performance at interview.
A strong UCAT score opens doors, but it does not guarantee an offer everywhere. Equally, a lower UCAT score is not automatically a dead end if the rest of your profile matches schools that use it differently.
Work experience, volunteering and wider preparation also shape how competitive you look, because they feed directly into interviews and the written application.
Look at how each school actually selects, not just where it appears in a league table. Useful comparisons include admissions-test weighting, GCSE and predicted-grade expectations, interview format, course structure, early clinical exposure, intake size and any documented contextual-admissions policy.
International applicants should also check how places are allocated, because quotas and requirements vary between schools.
